Learning Through Everyday Conversations

Use ordinary conversations to build vocabulary, observation and early thinking skills throughout the day.

Conversation is a learning opportunity

Children hear and use language during ordinary moments: breakfast, play, shopping, walking and getting ready for bed.

When adults pause, listen and ask simple questions, these moments can become opportunities to practice vocabulary and thinking naturally.

Ask questions that invite more than one word

  • What do you notice?
  • What do you think will happen next?
  • How are these two things different?
  • Which one would you choose?
  • Can you tell me about your picture?

Add new words naturally

If a child says, 'Look at the big truck,' an adult might respond, 'Yes, that is a huge dump truck.' The conversation continues while introducing useful vocabulary in context.

There is no need to turn every new word into a test. Hearing words repeatedly in meaningful situations helps children become familiar with them.

Try this today

During a walk or a trip outside, choose one thing your child notices. Spend a minute talking about its color, size, shape, sound or purpose.

LiaFun Tip

Give children time to answer. A short pause can give them the space they need to organize their thoughts.

Key Takeaway

Warm everyday conversations can support language and thinking without making children feel as though they are being tested.
