Counting becomes clearer with real objects
Numbers can feel more meaningful when children can move an object for each number they say. Blocks, large toy animals or other safe household items can make counting visible and hands-on.
Try a simple counting line
- Collect five objects.
- Place them in a row.
- Touch or move one object while saying each number.
- Count the whole row again.
- Change the number of objects and repeat.
Add small challenges
Ask your child to give you three objects or to make a group of four. You can also compare two groups by asking which has more or fewer objects.
Keep the numbers appropriate for the child's current comfort level.
Use counting during the day
Count plates for the table, steps to the door, toy animals in a line or pieces of fruit on a plate. Everyday counting shows children that numbers have practical meaning.
Encourage one-to-one counting: one spoken number for one object. Moving each object can make this easier.
Real objects help turn spoken numbers into something children can see, touch and understand.
