Make your letter cards
Cut sturdy paper or card into large pieces that are easy for your child to handle. Create matching pairs using the letters your child is currently exploring.
You can make uppercase pairs first or match uppercase letters with lowercase letters when the child is ready.
Begin with only a few pairs
- Place three letter cards where the child can see them.
- Give the child the three matching cards.
- Choose one card at a time.
- Say the letter together.
- Place matching letters side by side.
Connect letters with familiar words
Once a letter is matched, connect it to a familiar word. For example, A can lead to apple and B can lead to ball.
Pictures can be added later to create another matching game between letters and familiar objects.
Try this variation
Hide a few letter cards around the room and turn the activity into a letter hunt. Each discovered card can be matched with the card on the table.
You do not need to use the whole alphabet at once. A small set of letters keeps the game manageable.
A homemade letter game gives children a simple way to see, touch, compare and talk about letters.
