Turn a walk into a discovery game
A nature hunt can happen during a walk, in a yard or in another safe outdoor space. Instead of collecting everything, children can simply point, photograph or talk about what they notice.
What can you find?
- Something green.
- A leaf with an interesting shape.
- Something that moves.
- A natural object that is smaller than your hand.
- Something that makes a sound.
Talk about each discovery
Ask what the child notices about a discovery. Is it rough or smooth? Bright or dark? Moving or still? Familiar or new?
These small comparisons encourage observation and descriptive language.
Continue the activity at home
After the walk, ask your child to draw one favorite discovery or tell someone else about it. A simple follow-up helps the experience become part of a longer conversation.
Observe wildlife from a respectful distance and leave plants, nests and animals undisturbed.
A nature hunt helps children slow down, notice details and turn an ordinary outdoor moment into discovery.
