Pictures give children something concrete to discuss
A clear picture of an animal, object, food or place can start several different language activities. The same picture can be used for naming, describing, comparing and storytelling.
Start with name and describe
- What is this?
- What color is it?
- What do you notice?
- Where might we find it?
- What can it do?
Play a matching game
Place a few picture cards on the table and create matching word cards or duplicate pictures. Ask the child to find the pairs.
For younger learners, begin with only a few clear choices. Add more options as the activity becomes familiar.
Turn pictures into a story
Choose two or three pictures and ask your child to create a tiny story that includes them. There is no need for a perfect story; the purpose is to use words and ideas.
Reuse familiar pictures in different games. Children can practice the same vocabulary without repeating exactly the same activity.
Picture games can grow with a child, moving from simple naming to description, matching and imaginative language.
